telling people that you want to break up with physics is a lot more complicated than i thought.
when you tell a faculty member / advisor that you've lost interest in physics and are now considering alternate career, it is not surprising to see a surprised or condescending or disappointed look on their face. in fact, chances are that you will see all three of them on his face at the same time. when i came in and talked to a faculty advisor this morning to tell him that i've lost interest in physics, i was mentally prepared to handle such a thing. what rather surprised me was that when i said that i am now more interested in teaching than research, i get an even more condescending look of disbelief, as if saying "are you retarded?"
do research professors think that teaching is a horrible thing to do? do they think it's such a waste of time? if anything, i think they should respect teachers more, because not all brilliant research professors know how to teach properly.
